Winning protections against oil and gas expansion on the rivers and floodplains of Queensland’s Channel Country was huge.
And it only happened because communities across Western Queensland, along with supporters from all over Australia, stood up for this extraordinary place.
But the job is never finished. Traditional Owner Uncle George Gorringe has been fighting to keep Australia’s last remaining free flowing desert rivers running for more than three decades, back when cotton irrigation was the biggest threat.
We’ll be watching closely and staying in touch with the Traditional Owners, graziers, scientists and communities who care for this Country and want to keep it healthy. We remain hopeful that monsoonal rains in the north will keep bringing life-giving water into the Channel Country, filling the rivers and flooding the plains as they have for thousands of years.
Sign up now and we’ll send regular updates from out west. We’ll share stories and photos from this unique part of the world, and keep you connected to the people who live and work here. You’ll also be the first to know if anything threatens the rivers and floodplains we’ve worked so hard to protect.
